Altinator problem 1996 Mercury sable

I am having a strange altinator problem with my 1996 Mercury Sable. The Altinator kicks out (turns off) at about 2000 RPMs and the car starts running off battery power. When the RPMS drop below 2000 again the altinator kicks back in. I took off the and replaced the regulator and brushs (they were not very worn), didn't change the problem. Anyone got any ideas? Gotta goto work tonight

There is more to the alt. than just the brushes and regulator. Most people just swap out the whole alt these days. It could even be as simple as a poor ground.

I'd say 'replacement' right away if I had an alternator doing that to me. A reman/reconditioned unit is just as good as new and sometimes better than OE.
