I got a pretty good deal so I went ahead and took this 03 taurus SE off the guys hands. The pic above - is this the PCV valve? The car seemed to drive fine, I picked it up at a guys house and drove it 50 miles to mine - no issues. THis morning I start her up to move it and notice the Check Engine Light is now on.

Later this evening, I took the Taurus to get some groceries and it seemed like it wanted to die when I stopped at a red light, but it doesnt seem to do it all the time. The tranny seems to shift fine and I haven't stuck my head under the hood for more than 10 minutes yet.

I will take a look under the tin foil tomorrow - but could this somehow caused the car to somewhat sputter and feel like dieing when stopped? I'm going to replace this ASAP, but wondering if I may have bigger issues than a $10 PCV valve

Hello and good day:

May I ask a few question?
1. What size Engine is this?
2. Did you look under the Hood First when you bought the car, and ask the owner what was the Deal with the Aluminum sticking out the top of the Air Intake Manifold.
3. Did you go to Auto Zone and Advance Auto to get the "Check Engine Lite" checked or Have them Read the OBDII Codes to see what the "P" Code was?


If I'm correct there should be a PCV leading to the lower Air Intake Manifold...Attached to a Black Hose...leading to the Upper Manifold.

You may have any number of issues. Take it to Autozone or O'Reillys and they'll pull codes for free. That will give an idea of where the problem lies. Unplug the MAF and see if it runs better. Cleaning it with MAF cleaner helps too.

THanks for the quick reply guys. The previous owner bought the Taurus from his brother who was going through a divorce, who then sold it to me...he has no idea where the foil came from.

I saw a similar thread from "michel" and his "rough idling" problem was fixed when he replaced the PCV hose.

Sterling, it's a V6 3.0L and no sir i havent taken it anywhere yet. Literally brought it home yesterday.

excellent, thank you jwko. Im not much of a car expert, so I had to read up on vacuum leaks.

Found this from Engine Vacuum Leaks :

A rough idle or stalling. A performance cam with lots of valve overlap can give an engine a lopping idle, but so can a vacuum leak. A really serious leak can lean the air/fuel mixture out to such an extent that an engine won't idle at all. An EGR valve that is stuck open at idle can have the same effect as a vacuum leak. So too can the wrong PCV valve (one that flows too much air for the application), or a loose PCV hose. The rough idle in these cases is caused by "lean misfire." The fuel mixture is too lean to ignite reliably so it often misfires and fails to ignite at all. Lean misfire will show up as elevated hydrocarbon (HC) readings in the exhaust, enough, in fact, to cause a vehicle to fail an emissions test.

I heard the PCV valve can be pretty much just pushed in?

Bought a PCV valve and hose today for about $4 - will attempt to replace it hopefully Wednesday and provide you guys an update

Have you removed the foil and checked for a busted grommet or PCV hose?
