Brake warning light on.

This problem has been going on for a while now.
2003 Taurus SE, 3.0 OHV, rear drum with ABS & traction control.
The brake warning light on the dash stays on 95% of the time. I have changed the brake fluid level sensor and the switch behind the e-brake pedal. Bled the brakes repeatedly. Occasionally the light will go off for a few miles, but before you know it there it is again.
The problem seemed to start a couple of weeks after changing the rear struts and passenger side rear knuckle (damn pinchbolt). I have checked all brake lines and hoses, all seem to be good, none look kinked. Brakes seem to work fine besides ABS and TC seem inop.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Brake warning light on.

One of the wheel speed sensors is probably unhooked or broken. There's one at each wheel.

Re: Brake warning light on.

I did think about this, but wouldn't the ABS warning light come on? I know when these sensors went bad on the Focus I used to have the ABS light was illuminated.
Thanks

Re: Brake warning light on.

You're right, that's the light that I thought you meant. The only switches that control that are the ones you replaced. Try disconnecting the switches one at a time and then manually ground that wire to se what you get. Check the wiring diagrams on Autozone and follow them to see where it's happening. They're free to read online.

Re: Brake warning light on.

If it is just the red brake light and the yellow abs light is not on also this is due to your parking brake. You need to check that the pedal is pulled all the way up when pulling the release. If it still stays on after you have an issue with the parking brake warning switch. This is on the parking brake pedal assembly and sometimes these stick. Usually you can take it and clean the switch and it will go back to work.

Re: Brake warning light on.

I did try cleaning this switch when this first started, but I think I may have to try going to the pull it yard and grabbing a couple of these and see if they fix it. I hate diagnosing with salvage yard parts, but I hate throwing new parts at the problem slightly more!
Thanks for the info guys and I will let you know what happens once I put these parts on.

Re: Brake warning light on.

Have you tried disconnecting the switches and grounding the wires?
