Question Cam Position Sensor

Greetings:

1997 Sable 3.0 OHV.
I am in the process of replacing a cam position sensor and the distributor looking shaft that it mounts on.

The haynes says you need a special alignment tool ford # 303-589 before you engage the gear on the shaft into the gear on the cam. I know all this happens at #1 TDC but since I have had no luck locating this tool does anyone know if I can complete this without it? If so , How?

The shaft has a half circle that spins in front of the sensor, if I knew what position this half circle piece of metal should be in, I may be able to align it without the tool????

Anyone have this alignment tool for sale or know where I could get one???

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Sable
