I recently had code p 0401 on my 2000 taurus sel. I ran the car very low on gas and the code came up. I changed the dpfe sensor and the code cleared and car ran great again. Now about a month later I have code p0456 show up - small evap leak detected. My mpg has decrease a bit, no a whole lot, but some. I really have no idea on where to start looking to correct this problem. I tried the removal of the gas cap and didnt clear it. Any help on where to look would be helpful. I do wonder if the fuel filter got clogged up with junk when I ran it low on gas and this maybe is the cause of the problem. Thanks in advance for the help.

To test that system special tools are usually needed. I would clear the code and see if it comes back. My Crown Vic had that code and I found a piece of hair on the gas cap seal. I cleaned the seal and it's been 2 years without any codes. Just keep note of the code for future reference.

I had the same thing happen on my 2000 Sel Wagon. I kept getting a P0401 Low EGR Flow. I changed the Dpfe also. came to fine out that the Fuel Vapor Canister had gone bad. This is located under the Gas Tank itself.

It would not be a bad idea to change the Gas Filter first...Cheaper.
