False. I heard rumors of head gasket issues like the 3.8L it replaced but my uncle had his 1999 Sable LS for almost 9 years and it had 100,000 miles on it when it was totaled in October. My mother still has her 1999 Sable LS for 9 years almost and it has only 18,000 miles with only minor issues. I had a 2001 Taurus SEL for 3 years, went from 33,000 miles when I bought it to 46,000 miles when I traded it in. No major issues.
The engine itself is pretty good. I haven't heard anything bad about the pistons, crank, cam, etc. But it does have more than its share of air leaks that cause lean codes. Whether it's a rotted PCV elbow, intake/plenum gaskets or coils, this engine will require a bit more $$$$ than the Vulcan. On the flip side, it has a LOT more get up and go.
Basic design by Porsche. Aluminum block and heads. Purchased by Ford and Cosworth. Been around since late 90's. Variants have won Wards 10 best engines of the year several times. Used in many Ford products and in Jag. Long in the tooth with respect to technology. Should have bugs long gone at this point.
