got a problem with a sable

I have a friend that has a 99 Mercury Sable with the 3.0L V6. The crankshaft pulley will not turn with the crankshaft. When the car is running I can see the shaft turning inside the pulley. How and what tools do I need to fix this?

You can rent the tool from Autozone for free. If it's been run a long time like that, it may have worn the crankshaft. Here's how it's removed. | Repair Guides | Engine Mechanical | Crankshaft Damper | AutoZone.com

Will it need a new crankshaft bolt? Im assuming that the key on the crankshaft is broken where can I get one at? Should she get a new balancer pulley?

After it's removed, you can evaluate to see what all needs replacement. That's a very unusual problem. Is only the pulley not moving? If chipset comes in here, he could be more helpful.

Re: got a problem with a sable

Those engines are known for that and so are the 3.8's. Not common but it does happen
in those more than the other engines. You do not need to replace the pulley if not
damaged. The rubber vulconizing separates from the two pieces of the damper. DO NOT
replace it with one from the wreckers. You will probably have the same problem in the
future. Buy a new one. If the key and bolt are not damaged use them again. You will see the large flat washer behind the bolt on the crank. It will be concaved. Turn it around when you put it back so the bulge faces you. As you tighten the bolt the washer will flatten out making for a tighter fit.

What size is the crank pulley bolt? I read that link and found socket sizes needed to remove that bolt.
