My car is '04 sable.
When I got it, it only has one key for driving.
I know the keys to start the engine have built-in
chips and need to be programmed before use.
I wonder how to get a back up key in case this one
is lost. I made some replicas from Wal-mart. But those
ones are used to open door or chunk, not for driving.
Is there a place to get blank key with chips and to
program it? The dealer charges about $100, hate that.
You need 2 working keys to program your own, so no matter where you got your keys from, (ebay,Ford), you still can't program your own. Check with locksmiths in your area. The machines to program costs five grand and up, so yeah, it costs to get another. Locksmith should be much cheaper than dealer
I had the same problem with my '01 - only one working key. I bought 2 spare keys on ebay and I found a dealer that programmed the first one for $40 and I programmed the second one myself. Better buy 2 keys, so you have 3 total. Then if you loose one you can program a replacement yourself. This is the ebay seller I used - the keys arrived fast and they are genuine Ford keys.
