Loud squeek when turning steering wheel

I have a very loud squeek when turning my steering wheel. I have power steering fluid. If the pump is out and I drive it, am I damaging my car, or is it just a nuisance? I can't take it in today and need to use it over the weekend.

Re: Loud squeek when turning steering wheel

This is a common problem on older Ford Tauruses as I had this problem. If you mean "squeek" as in a whinning noise it's probably 'cause you need to add more steering fluid. Check the fluid level again; there is a mark on the reservoir's cap's stick for the level it should be at when the engine is hot and when the engine is cold. There will be a line on the stick marked 'HOT' and one marked 'COLD'. So if you have been using the car all day and the engine is hot, fill the resivoir to the 'HOT' mark. When you top up the fluid, turn the car on and you will still hear that whinning when you turn the wheel. So turn the steering wheel left and right several times and the whinning will stop in no more than a minute. You probably didn't do too much damage to the fluid pump let alone your car, unless the reservoir was completely dry. Make sure you put the fluid in the right reservoir, it should say it on the cap:)
