mercury sable ac blows hot air

i have a 2000 mercury sable ls with 110,000 miles. it has an all electronic interior temperature control with buttons to change the temperature.. yesterday when i switched the temperature control from 85 degrees to 60 degrees hot air continued to blow out. i pressed the max ac button with the temp set at 60 degrees and the hot air continued to blow out. it seems like hot air blowing out as if the temp was still set at 85 or 90. it has been working fine up until yesterday with very good cold air from the unit. it was not a gradual issue that got worse each day but it happened suddenly. the air is blowing out of the proper vents such as when i put on defrost it blows onto the windshield.does anyone have an idea of what the problem might be and how i would test to prove specifically what item is failing.thank you, paul

It's very possible that it's the blend door motor. Switching from cold to hot or visa versa, you should hear the motor run. Listen with the key in run and the engine off.
