I have a 2000 sable with the muffler starting go. With the system pretty much welded together can I just cut out the muffler and replace it or do I need to replace everything from the cads backs.

I'm sure you can if you can find a muffler replacement. There is a 99 % chance your
exhaust system is stainless steel. If you know how to work with it you could have some
success, maybe. I'd suggest sending it out. I don't work on my own exhaust systems.
It's not worth the hassle. I don't like burning and exploding rust rearranging my facial
features.

Got to agree with above . I sent our own cars and sales cars to exhaust centre for fixing as it was usually just as cheap / faster / and didn't tie up a mechanic and ramp on such a minor job waiting on parts etc .
