Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Hi,

I am considering purchasing a 1993 Taurus GL 3.0.
The front portion of the oil pan gasket (rubber curved seal) is protruding out of the pan causing a leak. Is this a sign of a more serious problem?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Hello Dave
Nope,If it is leaking it will have to be replaced with a new
gasket set, which is only the front and rear black seals. Now something
for you to keep in mind if your going to do it.Make sure you look at the oil pan very closely when you drop it to make sure there is no big rust
spots, because if there is it will be easier at the time to put a new one
on,they do not cost much. Also make sure you clean the surfaces very
well before putting the silicone on the sides of the pan and the corners.
What I suggest to people is start the job on a sat morning, when finished
before you pour the oil back in,let it sit over night to give the silicone
time to completely harden.Hope this helps Rob

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Rob,
Thanks for your help, it's been a number of years since I've done this.
Do I need to put silicone on the front and rear seals or install them dry?
What type of silicone is best for the sides? Blue, Red, or Black?

Are there exhaust gaskets (donuts) that should be replaced?

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Hello Dave
Usually I use Black for the oil pans,Alot will depend on
on the manufactorer that supplies you with the gasket,as I have
ran into some will supply you with only the two end ones and
some will give you the sides too.As far as the exhaust goes, you
will only need the one that goes between the cat. converter and
the exhaust pipe. The exhaust manifolds have the ball part you are
thinking about attached to them.It is a easy job to do,just time
consumming. HTHS Rob

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Rob,
I installed the new gasket from the dealer (expensive but nice), no more leak from it.
I found out that the oil dripping onto the cat converter is also coming from somewhere else, and it looks like I'll to remove the "Y" pipe again to see it. At this point I have no clue where the oil is coming from. Nothing looks wet.
Any ideas?
Dave

Re: Oil Pan Gasket Problems

Hello DP
If you have oil dripping on the Cat,it is more then likely
comming from above, and above is your back Rocker cover Gasket.

Hey Rob,
Do I have to remove the intake manifold to change the rear valve cover gasket?
