I bought a used car: 1998 Ford taurus se, VIN:'U', milege:67100. My user guide recommand me use 5w-30, But the castrol's websit recommand me use 10w-30. I'm in AL, so i want to use castrol 'SYNTEC BLEND' 10w-30. How do you think about it?

I completely agree with Engels Peralta! And, you might consider using a fully synthetic oil. It is even easier on the engine, prolongs its life and you can go longer between changes -- dino-oil = 3,000 miles and synthetic can go up to 7,500 or more (I go about 5,000 miles between changes). I am currently trying Shell Rotella synthetic in my '99 right now. We'll see how it does compared to the Valvoline I had in before.

BTW, what oil filter do you use?

Castrol 'SYNTEC BLEND' 10w-30. I put this in my 99 Sable 24v DOHC and I actually see and feel a difference. You actually need to baby these engines if you want to get a long life out of them.

Ford changed the recommended oil for 1993 and newer Taurus/Sable. Ford recommends 5W-20 oil. Ford's 5W-20 oil is a semi-synthetic. The only fully synthetic 5W-20 I have found is Castrol Syntec. I use it in my 2001 Taurus SEL with a 3.0 Duratec and in my mother's 1999 Sable LS with a 3.0 Duratec. On both cars I have not expierienced any excessive oil consumption. If you decide to opt for semi-synthetic there are many good brands. The choice is yours.

I saw that recomendation and 5w-30 seems like the closest thing to 5w-20 I can get. Would it be bad to use 10w-30?

I also am not sure about what oil to use. It has a leak and I have to add anyway, so I just use the cheap stuff. I can find either 5w-30 or 10w-30 for pretty cheap. If I am constantly putting new oil in the engine which one should I go for?

Castrol Syn is not true synthetic, but it is pretty good. Get Mobil, or Amzoil for a truly good synthetic oil. True synthetics are olefin based and do not react with blow by gases and condensation the way regular oil does and therefore it stays clean and works well for much longer intervals.
I have used Mobil and Amzoil for years in various Mopars changing at 20-25,000 mile , or one year which ever comes first . I use regular off the shelf oil filters (motorcraft, Molil, Amzoil, NAPA) and change them 4 times a year. With each new filter I put in enough oil to top it off again. I never have to add oil inbetween filter changes. So at the end of the year I have gone through 9 quarts of oil. 5 quarts when I do the complete change and one more each time I change the filter. All of the cars I do this to have run great, gotten good gas mileage, and they look good inside. When you do change the oil after a year you will be shocked at what you see. The oil will still feel good between your fingers, it pours out of the engine with no noticable thickening, and it doesn't smell to b ad either. An added bonus is this. It is cheaper to do this than use conventioal oil changing at 3,000 mile intervals and you don't have so much old oil to get rid of.

Your probably refering to Castrol Synthetic Blend, NOT Syntec. Syntec is a full synthetic. I believe there are more brands of 5W-20 just coming out now, but the cheapest on out there is Syntec.

I use 10-W30 in my Ford Crown Victoria and it works great for me.

I would use that. For The Win
