Hello all,

My Taurus is still throwing 171 and 174 codes after properly cleaning the intake and doing a full tune up.

A mechanic I trust ran a full disgnostic and said the intake gaskets are leaking, which makes the computer think it's running lean for the amount of air....

Researching this forum it APPEARS that intake manifold gaskets (top and bottom) are somewhat common on 3.0L Vulcans.

Is this the case? He cautioned me that as they deteriorate, I might actuially suck part of the gasket and get meyself in for more problems, or burn up a piston and the problem progresses.

You guys have been 100% in my book on this forum and have saved me thousands. Is the mechanic on the mark, or are there other gremlins that I need to eliminate before dropping $500?

The gaskets are almost certain to be the problem. I doubt that they'd suck in but they also give you poorer fuel mileage. Are you going to do them yourself? Thay take a little time gut aren't real hard to change. If you get a Haynes or chilton manual, the explain the job pretty well.

I read thru the Haynes manual and it's more than I want to tackle given the little time I have.

The cam synchronizer and cam sensor I will do.
