My mother in laws 2001 Taurus engine light came on today. Pulled code, came up p0172, rich in bank 1. Did a google search on code and came up with what appears to be a Ford tech article but it mainly helps with lean conditions. What seems like the best place to start? By the way, code p0175 (bank 2) is pending. Thanks.
PO172 & PO175 are codes for bad CO2 Sensors. I have those same codes for my sho also. THe only problem is I have 4 of them nd they are QUITE expensive. Bank 1 is the exhaust pipe coming from the front of the engine and Bank 2 is the exhaust pipe coming from the rear of the engine.
You are more likely to have a rich fuel conditon which is most likely caused by high fuel pressure. Check your fuel pressure for starters before throwing you money away on O2 sensors. If you had codes for an o2 sensor then I would definitely put in an O2 sensor-NOT FOR A FUEL SYSTEM RICH CODE.
A code P0172 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters (K&N, etc.) can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled
There could be a vacuum leak.
There could be a fuel pressure or delivery problem
Possible solutions include:
Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
Clean the MAF sensor. Consult a service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
Inspect fuel lines for cracks, leaks, or pinches
Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail
Check the fuel injectors, they may be dirty. Use fuel injector cleaner or get them professionally cleaned/replaced.
Check for an exhaust leak before the first oxygen sensor (this is unlikely to cause the problem, but it is possible)
my car, an 02 taurus was giving me trouble codes p0172 and p0175.
I took my car to Ford and they had to reprogram the computer due to incorrect values for barametric pressure. cost me 120 dollars at Ford dealer 100$ for scan and 20 for installed software. I hope this helps you all.
