99 Taurus - I recently had my daughter leave the lights on and after recharging the battery, noticed that the key fobs didnt work. started by replacing the 12v battery in the fob, then checked fuse box- Also I do have a security system that was installed as an after market item ( I think? - I got the car from Father in law and think he had it put in) I also tried resetting the key fobs, but didnt get the locks to cycle. Any ideas on what to check next?

Try reprogramming your FOBs as follows (cut from owner's manual):

Programming remote transmitters
It is necessary to have all (maximum of four — original and/or new) of
your remote transmitters available prior to beginning this procedure.
To program the transmitters yourself:
-Place the key in the ignition and
turn from 2 (LOCK) to 3 (OFF)
and cycle between 3 (OFF) and
4(ON) eight times in rapid
succession (within 10 seconds)
with the eighth turn ending in the
4 (ON) position. The doors will
lock/unlock to confirm that
programming mode has been entered.
- Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any
button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the
remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds
pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming
mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.)
- Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters.
The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has
been programmed.
- When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn
the ignition to 3 (OFF) or wait 20 seconds. Again the doors will
lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed.

Thanks for your help, however this didnt work. I got my manual out and found the position chart and no luck - I am just wondering if the security system has something to do with it??

One of my fobs quit working after 10 years.....

I can buy things just wearing out, but both of my fobs went at the same time. I tend to think maybe the reprogramming is the key and maybe i am just not doing it right- but i have tried several methods and none work- may be time to go to the dealership

Do the door locks acknowledge the programming start sequence when you turn the ignition off and on rapidly 5 times?
