Question about buying a 97 Taurus

Hi,
how safe is it to buy a 97 taurus LX with 180k miles on it? Would it be a bad idea? im just looking for a car that i can use during winter. What are some trouble spots?

yes, it would be a bad idea unless he has recently had the transmission replaced or rebuilt by a reputable shop.

so the tranny is the biggest trouble spot for taruses? anything else i should look for?

various electrical things aren't very good on the car, but there's no way to really "look for" them, they just sorta break when they feel like it.

Yeah, with a 9 year old car, a few or many things can go wrong because of age.

this car has a bad history of engine troubles like the head gasket, the transmission always drops dead and its got a history of cooling tower cracks and electrical troubles no one will be able to figure out. buy a later year and make sure you have a mechanic check it out.

only the 3.8 had head gasket problems and the 3.8 wasn't offered in '97
