I haven't had the need to do anything to my A/C compressor...yet.... however I'd leave it to a good shop. Playing around with refrigerant isn't to be taken lightly. I know where you're coming from though - trying to save costs.
Have you sprayed the clutch with oil? This worked on my older dodge as the clutch was VERY rusted due to offroading and the like. It's by no means a proper fix, however if money is an issue it should allow you to use the A/C until you can take it in.
