'service engine soon'

How do I get the service engine soon to turn off? Why is it coming on? I really don't want to take it to a dealership and be charged a bunch of money for something that potentially could be easy to fix.

thanks

Re: 'service engine soon'

You can take it to autozone and they will read the code for you.

you can go to autozone and get them to do diagnostics for your car. some thing like an oxygen sensor will keep that light on forever.

confused Re: 'service engine soon'

I was wondering if the codes stay in memory if the check engine light is not on? My daughters car keeps stalling in hot weather but check engine light comes on but does not stay on. Will the codes still be there to be read?

Re: 'service engine soon'

If you disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes & then reconnect it, the codes should clear; but they will most likely come back on if there's a problem.

Re: 'service engine soon'

ok- I took the car to auto zone and the code they came up with is P1131. They were unable to read it due to the code being specific to Fords- told me that I needed to call the dealership. Does anyone know what it means?

Re: 'service engine soon'

I had the same thing. Autozone said low coolant.
It was the gas cap. If the cap is the slightest bit loose change it.
