I am working on a '91 Sable GL that has good bulbs and good fuses but the lower brake lights and rear turn signals won't work nor will the rear flashers. The high brake light and the front signals work but at a high flash rate. I don't know where to start.

Check your tailight grounds for a start. Please note the brake and turn signal are combined in one bulb, a #3157, on the outboard positions only. The inner small ones are only extra parking lights. You way just have a bad multifunction switch.

Thanks for responding. Where to my tail light ground conductors actually reach ground? What is a multifunction switch and how do I replace it?

The mutifunction switch is the turn signal, front wiper and headlight high beam switch. You do not have to remove the steering wheel to replace it. To replace it, using an 1/8" flat punch insert the punch in the access hole on the steering column lower trim shroud with the ignition key in the on postion. Press up on the punch until you can easily remove the ignition lock cylinder. Next, remove the 4 T30 bolts for the steering column opening cover and remove the cover. Remove the 2 screws at the bottom of the trim shrouds and the 1 screw on the right side of the shroud and remove the shroud. The switch is held on by a few screws and it just slides off. P.S.-Once you remove these covers if your shift indicator (PRNOD1) is not fully pointing to the selected position (Most notibly in park) the thumbwheel for its adjustment is right near the column. Just turn the thumbwheel until it points right.
