Re: taurus owners tell there horror be honest

My '93 Taurus (3.8L station wagon) has been on the road for 215,000 miles without a major problem. Sure it's had a few minor glitches ... poor door lock connection, rear hatch fault (repaired with a paper clip), A/C recharge after 10 years, etc ... but compared to my Chev, the Ford is a dream. The Ford always starts in any weather ... the '93 Chev only starts when it's been recently repaired .. bad fuel pump, failed ignition module, bad ignition coil, poor brakes, with the Chev the list seems endless (and the Chev has half the milage of the Ford).
I keep waiting for the Ford to develop the well-known transmission or engine problems reported by other owners ... but so far the car is (almost) faultless .... and I use it to haul tons of firewood each Winter.

I have narrowed the problem down to it being a ford
You are so right on streetfire! I joined the Forum and have always thought the problem was the blue oval. Well, mine doesn't say Ford on it but it is the same thing. Mercury (97) Sable GS wagon. The GS stands for "Grief Stricken".

We drive it with the normal Ford option that is constantly on, (Check ENGINE Light)!

The OBD II says, PO402 code. So, I had the dealer put in a DPFE sensor. They ripped me off $240.00 bucks to put that in. I decided right there to never take it to the dealer. 2 weeks after that the Check Engine Light was on again.

Changed the EGR Solenoid Vacuum Valve. The EGR Valve seems tight.
I suppose it's the EGR valve but I didn't want to spend $85.00 on a new EGR valve and then find out it doesn't clear the C.E.L.

Run her tell she drops.

The DPFE Sensor is the most common cause of that code. If replacing that and the EVR solenoid doesn't fix it, there are three possiblities left. Either the EGR valve is sticking, or the EGR Tubes are clogged. The third and least common possibility would be the PCM. You should have went right back to the dealer. Since it wasn't fixed, they should not charge you any more money to fix the concern. At the Dodge dealer I work at, if it comes back with the same problem within 90 days, it is considered a comeback, and more than half the time, we will not charge the customer any more money or only charge a minimal fee if it is not directly related to the last failure (Usually only the price of the parts).

Re: taurus owners tell there horror be honest

My taurus so far has done very good for me, a simple pressure test to find a leak here and there but thats to be expected. BUT I bought my car at 122k miles for $800 and noticed some small modifiacations such as custom sway bars. So I did some research on my car and the block number and all and found out that the transmission and the engine were both replaced in 1999 at 78k miles. Only complants I have is for one, the audio deck is very poor that they originally sell the car with and when replaceing there is hardly any room for the reverse audio kit behind it.. it is very hard to get a cd player actually set in, in this vehicle. The front drivers winow operations pannel operates both of the front windows but, it does not operate either of the back. Also the hole in the firewall for installing additional components is very very poorly located or non existant. The car lighter port is 100% out there is not connectivity somewhere in the cord from the engine to the lighter and its not worth trying to fix because one bad jolt to it and the motherboard in the car is fried. It is very well geared for city driveing and it has real good get up and go. Last complant.... The damn thermo sensor isnt working, ah well, just a cheep part.

Any one who drives around with the SES on all the time is telling the world they don't know how to fix it. Pretty bad when the car is telling you what's wrong and your mechanic can't get it fixed.

Thumbs down Re: taurus owners tell there horror be honest

I bought my 1997 Ford SHO from a dealer with 36k miles on in 2001! Before my extended warranty ran out I had go thru:
- 3 yes THREE Transmissions(probably my style of driving, my bad i guess or trying to drive a SHO hard) But a brilliant idea by Ford to use a tranny from their bone stock Taurus in a car with over 100 more horsepower.
- The issue with the dome lights staying on (wd40 in the locks works here)
- Not being able start it. (havent check that "brake switch" yet) Sometimes when i go to start it there is just Nothing.. absolutely nothing. jostle the shifter around, slam the door a few times, pray to God and viola it starts. Its about a 10 min random process, and one night I left it where it was came back the next day, started right up like champ.
- Numerous, numerous coils, and replacing ignition wires in an attempt to rid myself of a Rough idle. Still a problem to this day. All the possible causes..<breathes in much air> Coil, wires running to each coil melting, Cam position sensor, Fuel Filter, fuel pump, entire ignition system, various other sensors and there are more but I forget them all now! This seriously pisses me off the most...I have spent over a grand trying to get the engine to run smooth. The dealer nor any of the mechanics I have gone to can figure it out.
- Stereo is weak
- Powered sunroof malfuctioned a few times (just decided not to work for short periods of time)
- Oh and lets not forget the Cam failures for the V8 models, it hasn't happened to me but I am sure as hell not gonna pin or weld my cam's for what $500 to $1000. ( Ford SHO for sale 1997 80k miles :) )
- I am sure there is more, but I havent driven it now for a while so ..

very very dissatisfied with this car. I will switch back to a ricer for the rest of my days, maybe more expensive to fix.. but umm I doubt it.

Re: taurus owners tell there horror be honest

I have 3 Taurus's. 1996 GL Vulcan engine, 2000 Flex Fuel Engine, 2004 SE Vulcan Engine. I've had to replace parts on my cars. Nothing major. I look at it as normal wear and tear maintenance. You find lemons in every make and model. I've seen Honda's and Toyota's on the side of the road. I just didn't have to pay as much as those guys did, when I bought my cars. It also helps if you have a little mechanical knowledge. If not you will pay through the nose! I guess I've just been fortunate (knock on wood). I like my cars. I've finally got comfortable with my knowledge of Ford Taurus's. If I can't fix it I have a place where they seem to be honest. You can't expect just to put gas and change the oil and run it like a scalded dog. Just my 2 cents.
