Question Taurus/Sable Accesories/Modifications

I'm starting a thread to see what all you other Taurus/Sable owners have for accesories on your car. On my 2001 Taurus SEL w/ a 3.0L Duratec I have the following accesories/modifications:
---Ford rear molded splash guards-They are actually very small compared to the ones I put on my mother's 99 Sable LS.
---Ford Auto-Dimming rear view mirror with compass.
---Wood grain dash kit from exoticwooddash.com-synthetic dark burlwood grain-only complaint is the ICP overlay is coming up under the cassette slot.
---Undercoated underbody-I dropped the exhaust down by unhooking all the rubber hangers and setting down on the L. rear lower control arms; I unbolted the evap. canister assy. from the trunk pan, and supported it with a jack stand; I taped the brake cables where they enter the plastic sheething; and taped around the rear wheelwells and on the rocker molding side of the pinch rail.
---Swapped out black door lock buttons for chrome ones-fronts are off of a 1988 Escort, rears are off of a 1988 Crown Vic-could have gotten two more Crown Vic ones at a salvage yard but didn't have time.
---Added footwell lights under dash-In 1999 to cut costs Ford got rid of the under dash footwell lights. The brackets still are bulit into the dash frame to this day. What I did was get two cornering light sockets, wired them to the dome light wire in the harness under the R. kick pad and grounded them in the same location using the existing ground. I used 921 bulbs instead of the original 194 bulbs because they are brighter and just fit inside of the bracket. You do not have to increase the fuse amperage for this modification.
---Slush mats.
---Sylvania SilverStar Headlight bulbs.
---Removed tow hooks from rear bumper.
---Painted upper intake manifold, valve covers, water pump belt cover, and accelerator cable cover Ford Dark Blue.
Al of these modifications except for painting the engine were because my Taurus is a top of the line SEL. It has almost every option except traction control, moonroof, and other little things. I wanted it to be more top of the line. I really don't think I will do any engine mods. The painting of the engine was just for the hell of it. Kind of a throw back to the late 60's and early 70's when all Ford engines were painted blue. Chime on in!!!

Re: Taurus/Sable Accesories/Modifications

Hey, I'll have a go. Just noticed your request and thought I'd chime in. My 1994 Sable wagon is a pretty darn good car. Very pretty and very comfortable. In many ways one of the best cars I've ever owned (That covers a lot of territory!)

Mine has a 3.8 and, of course, the transmission failed. I had it upgraded to the latest clutches so the new transmission should be good to go for the duration. I suppose that counts as a modification.

I've put in a bit more powerful headlight bulbs and have polished the headlights. Added small fog lamps under the bumper aimed out to the sides to cover the dark area that the headlights ignore. I changed the horn to a Maserati air horn (I've always used these. It's just fun!). I've changed my front seats to nice, plush vinyl. Who ever started this idiocy of cloth seats? We moved past that garbage long, long ago. Leather or good vinyl doesn't stain, feels great, looks great, can be cleaned and feels good even when entering or leaving the car. And it just looks better!

I've added an inexpensive CD player, just because. My only real complaint is the mushy rear end handling. I want oversteer, darnit! I've finally found a supplier for the Addco rear antiroll bar that is actually strong enough for the job. It hasn't arrived here yet, I'll follow up when it does. I'm still looking for a source for stiffer suspension bushings, especially for the rear.

Hey, Tbird - I'm interested in that dimming rear view mirror with compass that you have. I wasn't aware of such an item from Ford. Where do I find one?

As for Gordon above - I've "reported" his abusive posts. Nobody needs to read that kind of stuff. We all know those words but decent people don't write them. Does the "reporting" of this sort of thing do anything?

Later,

- Chris

Hmmm.... apparantly reporting offensive material does do some good!

Thanks LunaticSVT!

cool Re: Taurus/Sable Accesories/Modifications

First I would like to appologize for my obscene reply to Gordon's obscene reply- I usually wouldn't do that but I had a temporary lapse in judgement, compared to Gordon's permanent lapse in judgement---and lapse in ability to type out a sentence that makes sense. Now the matter at hand. I got the auto-dimming mirror at the local Ford dealer for around $150. I know Donnellye makes an auto-dimming also.

Hi. I'm interested in the auto-dimming mirror also. What about power? Was the wiring already in place under the headliner? Or did you have to install it, too?

The Ford auto dimming mirror comes with a fuse tap that attaches to a key on power fuse on the junction block. I believe it was for the radio. The ground wire simply attaches to a pre-existing ground behind the L. kick pad. Good luck!!!

Re: Taurus/Sable Accesories/Modifications

So far just Sylvania cool-blue headlight bulbs. I am thinking of pulling the headlight assemblies off a 1999 from a junkyard if I can. Suprisingly, considering all the cost cutting Ford did on the Taurus in 1997 to 2000, the headlights on the 99's were actually coated and made from better materials that resist pitting and turning yellow, which was a big problem on the 1996-1998's. They also have a neat black inside instead of the chrome.
