Is it time to change the coolant?

Ever since I bought my '04 Sable 1.5 years ago,
I noticed that the coolant has a brown color.
Does it mean the coolant has some rust dissolved
and needed to changed? Or some brand of coolant
just appears brown..

Thanks

Time for a flush and coolant change.

Re: Is it time to change the coolant?

Is there a non-motorcraft antifreeze that anyone could recommend for an 03 sable ?

Green will always do. Usually the cheapest no name stuff on the shelf. With the coolant problems the newer Vulcans have I suggest a yearly flush of the stuff.

Prestone coolant works good and comes in extended drain and reg drain. I recommend the extended drain for the few extra bucks as it has more rust inhibitors in it. I use it in my '99 Taurus and change it out every 40,000miles (60 000kms).

Re: Is it time to change the coolant?

The same stuff was in our '99 - dex...something? It clogged the heater core to the point of almost no heat. Had it flushed and replaced with Prestone. Problem solved. Among other nasty things, it'll eventually cause the level in your expansion tank to be unreadable.
