I'm trying to figure out why our 2004 Taurus SES 3.0 liter DOHC continues to have drivability issues and seems to run too rich. I don't have any sophisticated test equipment, besides a multimeter, and a OBD II code reader, but I have tracked down and replaced several bad coils (coil on plug). It does not have a fuel pressure regulator, apparently the fuel pump, controlled by the ECM varies fuel output. The plugs get coated with black deposits within a few weeks/ months. We already replaced one of the cats, due to failure and increased back pressure.
I'm replacing the plugs again, and checked the injectors, tips had some deposits, but not clogged. Ohms resistance on the connector end were within spec,.ranging from 13.2 to 14.5 I have replaced the Fuel pressure solenoid, and the egr solenoid. traced the vacuum tube hoses across the intake manifold, EGR valve.
I think the fuel pump may be the problem, since on this model it regulates fuel pressure, but if anything it would appear to be too high, supplying too much fuel, causing the plugs to foul. This model has the return-less fuel rail, without a schrader valve, what is the best way to test fuel pressure? also, does the ohms test on the injectors prove they are ok?, or could they still be causing the stumbling. It usually happens under normal driving. If you step on it, it clears up and the car responds well.? go figure. unrelated, I have a loose throttle cable since the plastic collar on it broke. I have had numerous codes. most recent were. P0183, P0193, P0401. any thoughts would be welcome. I do have a pressure gague, if I can hook it up on the fuel somewhere.:|
