My son has a 98 Taurus 4dr that we need to tow. Transmission went out on the way home from a trip. Towing service that picked it up said that they "released" or "disconnected" the transmission so that they could pull it up onto their flatbed. I wasn't around when they dropped it off and now it seems to be locked up in PARK.

I have also been told by other people that to tow a Taurus without a dolly you have to disconnect the trans, but so far nobody has been able to tell me how to do that. Can anyone descripe how to do disconnect or release a transmission for towing?

There is nothing usually to disconnect on a FWD vehicle. Only thing I can think of is if the shift cable broke inside they disconnected the transmission end and moved the trans. lever manualy to neutral. If you look down directly below the tube running to the throttle body you will see the lever and cable. Start the engine holding the brake pedal down then operate the shift lever. If the detents feel looser and the cable doesn't move the trans lever it's a broken cable.
