tranny not shifting rite

hey guys i have a 97 taurus gl, i would like to know at what mph should ur tranny shift into 4th gear, i have a feeling my tranny is not working right it shifts from 1-2 2-3 with no problem but as soon as i get on the highway and acelerate about 80mph i still feel like the car is in 3rd cuz i dont see any upshifting in my rmp, so i have to put it in overdrive then i feel it's shift into a higher gear, if i would floor the gas from a red light my rpm goes to about 5200 then the tach goes down (gear changes here) and start rising again till it goes to about 4500rpm and the gear changes again.

You should be driving in the Overdrive position anyways. If you have it in Drive it will not shift into 4th gear. The high reving is normal when you floor it and hold it. You only drive in Drive when on hilly terain where you need some engine braking and so the tranny doesn't shift back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear continuously.
