Question Will not start, battery smokes

Hello all!!

Well I had an amazing day /sarcasm

So, here is the back ground. 1997 Taurus, 3.0 (not ztec) around 100,000 miles. This is my backup car as my main (2003 Focus zts) has some major issues and I'm driving the Taurus.

First, the car was making a slight roar at startup, went away once you drove. Car was also making noises (squeeks, pops, etc..) from the area of the serpentine belt, it was the original belt and cracking so I replaced. Lastly, the past couple of nights, the car did not want to start right away... a little hesitation, then it would start.

So today. I bought the new belt, put it on in the lot and the car started... had a little bit of smoke from where the old belt left some rubber, removed the problem, car would not start. It clicks , the starter turns slow and the engine never gets going.

So since I was at the parts store, I tested the battery. Bad, so I bought a new one. Here is a side note.. When we bought the new one, we realized that the previous owner put in the wrong size battery (450 CCAmps). Put the battery in... same thing, wont start... BUT this time we have smoke!!! Smoke from the cables. The positive cable running to the starter was very warm, I replace that cable as it was bad corroded and cheap thing to do. Still would not start and still smoke... ground now too.

So I took out the starter and had it tested, it passed. Reinstalled, still smoked (ground only and wire to block was warm) and still would not start.

So, I'm lost, puzzled and lucky to be off work tomorrow to fix my car. ANY help would be much appreciated as I'm between checks, with two broke down cars that wont start.

Question Re: Will not start, battery smokes

Have you tried removing the belt and attempting to start the engine??? Sounds like you may have a locked up alternator or other belt driven accessory. You can turn each pulley by hand after you remove the belt.

Re: Will not start, battery smokes

Well I got the car started (1st try, 1st turn of key... before I did anything) and moved back to my place. There is a loud grinding from the area of the serpentine belt. Upon a further look, the belt tensioner housing was vibrating like crazy... the sound is from that area (maybe the power steering pulley), so I purchased a new tensioner and will check it out tomorrow morning when I start the car with no belt on. Hopefully it is just the tensioner going out.

Well...

It's actually at my AC Compressor pulley. Lots of play and it grinds. The treads practically want to pop off.
