'05 finally at local dealer...
talking to my sister in law last night, about to say 'bye', and she's like "Oh- almost forgot we got our first mustang in today"...NEEDLESS to say, got out of work early today for a change and headed to the dealership- almost hoping to find a bunch of stuff I hated about the mustang, or way in excess of the $26k estimated at the cleveland auto show(I really dont need another car, and its been nice not having a payment for the past year or so).
Son of a gun. I just cant nit-pick anything about the car without really stretching. The one they got in was the 'GT premium' pkg in white, and from every angle it looked absolutely gorgeous. Basic white/no stripes/the car looks awesome. $26-something sticker.
If Ford keeps the pricing, and builds enough of these, I'm betting they are going to have one of their most profitable years in decades.
If I were to get one, I think the plain white GT sitting right there would be just fine. Only things I think I'd possibly consider changing:
1) maybe fill the sail panel windows so it looks more like my 69- I'd been
thinking about this for a while, but in real life the windows didnt look that
bad...
2) probably something like a 69 cougar eliminator bolt on hoodscoop(like a
boss429, but much smaller/flatter)
3) maybe black louvers and black out the rear spoiler
4) probably cut out the somewhat inexpensive looking molded plastic grille,
and replace with black powdercoated expanded metal.
I'd read some reports the interior was kinda 'cheap'- personally, I really liked it(seats werent 'comfortweave' as I had hoped though). Ive seen the Steeda/Rousch pics- and personally like Fords frontend/bullitt looking wheels better- the frontend is about perfect(except the grille maybe) in my opinion.
Under the hood- I couldnt believe the width of the engine bay...it had sohc v8, but I bet a boss429 would even fit between the towers. Looked like all steel control arms, couldnt really get under it, but looks like no cast aluminum suspension stuff to break, looks like all stainless BIG pipes...
One small thing I dont like on it(same setup on crown vic) is the way the quarterpanel lip is crimped flat to the inner wheelhouse(like a doorskin). the quarter lip feels paperthin, and I think the vertical seam is gonna be early corrosion point- If I happen to survive after mentioning it again to my wife, and actually get one of these, I'd sure put something heavier than paint over that inside edge...my neighbor bumped something with her crown vic and pushed her quarter lip in bad- body shop pulled out literally by hand, tapped a bit,sealed/repainted...not much strength in a flat edge.
I have never seen any new vehicle that looked this good to me(GT40 not included- but who can get one or afford one?)
Corvette- yeah looks ok-95% of us cant afford one.
Viper coupe- sharp/agressive/very neat- 99.9% of us can afford one
Lamborghini Murceilago- very pretty, but really 99.99999999% cant afford it
Mustang- Every angle you look at it, it just looks great, and although 100% new, its unmistakaby a Mustang. This is a absolutely beautiful car that the average guy can possibly afford, drive year 'round, take on trips etc- instead of the typical polishing / 'worshipping' / 2000 mile a year stuff typical of the other great looking cars available at 2/5/10 times the price...Personally I like the styling better than the other upscale models mentioned above...
The people at Ford ought to be mighty proud of this car- best looking factory built automobile since 1970 in my opinion(new GT40 not included).
Go check one out- please help me nit-pick some more...cant quit thinking about this car...Im as excited as I was back in '82 when I had a chance to get a 14000 mile '69 boss429 (kk1311-dunno what ever happened to it)for $8500- and couldnt get a loan.
I often think of that boss that slipped away, but today this new mustang actually makes me as excited as if it were a brand new boss sittin there- and they are actually going to build them for a while- and they are priced within range of the average guy- and financing is available- and it gets 25 mpg- and its got a good warranty- and its not a rare 40 yr old thing that you are afraid to drive because parts aint available- and it corners- and it has A/C- and it has 4 wheel discs...I'm 100% sold, just gotta convince the wife 7 cars wouldnt be one too many...
