Re: 15 g's to spend on 89 gt
Vitruvious,
Glad to hear that you have a nice 89'. I sold a hopped up 1989 LX about two years ago and man do I miss her. In my opinion, I would first start off by utilizing the power that is already there by installing a set of 3.73/1 gears and an Auburn Pro diff. That way, you will get a great launch and both tires will bite. In my 89' I also put in a Pro 5.0 short throw shifter to help eliminate the missed shifts from 2nd to 3rd. After that I redid the suspension w/ all new springs (stock....non-lowering), KYB shocks & struts, Factory Five upper & lower control arms, and polyurythane bushings all of the way around. Then I turned my attention to the exaust. I put on Flowmaster dual chamber 2 1/2" system w/ BBK shorty unequal length headers, and an off-road h-pipe. This helped w/ the flow, increased HP. a bit and made a world of difference in the car's sound. After this was all finished, it was time to turn my attention under the hood. I added Holly's Systemax II kit. BOY DID THIS KIT WORK! It's almost too much for the street but it is damn fast! You won't loose many races w/ this set up. My STRONG advice to you is that if you were to go this route, spend the extra dollars on a new short block to make sure that your bearings, seals, and rings can handle the extra pressure. The kid that bought my car blew the motor because he was racing it too hard and the piston ring could not handle it and finally gave out. I'd stick w/ the tried and true 5.0. Plus you can get it in stroker configurations that will take a 302 all the way up to a 336. If you build the engine right so that it will compliment the rest of your Systemax components......your going to have one wicked Mustang! Enjoy it....I did!
