2000 Mustang Clutch - Balance problem

Hello - The throw out bearing failed on me at 97K miles - Had a new clutch assembly installed and also had the flywheel surfaced. Now I have a vibration in the engine that peaks at 2000 rpms. This is happens if you are in park, clkutch in, out, moving, etc...I change plugs and did find 3 spark plug boots dry rooted....Still, not change in vibration.

I think something was installed incorrectly when the shop completed the clutch - They are claiming that if it was out of balance, it would continue to get worse as the RPMs reached red line. Can the fly wheel be installed 180 degress out? Is this an externally balanced engine? Any other ideas?

It is a 2000 ford mustang convertible with the 4.6 liter V8 5 speed.

Re: 2000 Mustang Clutch - Balance problem

Hi Keith
What you describe sounds to me like a pilot bearing problem. From memory, this bearing has a very weak cage that gets easily damaged by the input shaft when installing the gearbox if the person doing it is not carefull. And if the vibration wasn't there before the clutch was changed you'd think it's got something to do with the work they've done. I've seen it happen many times. Pull the box out and look through the centre of the clutch assembly to see if there are missing needles or a damaged cage. cheers

Re: 2000 Mustang Clutch - Balance problem

Thanks for the reply - I dropped the car off at the shop that completed the work and will let then know the information you supplied. But I think you might be correct. Just the other day there is a squealing noise that does change in pitch randomly, almost like a bad bearing noise. After a few minutes of driving, this noise will go away - basically when the car warms up. This noise is from the bell housing and started three days after I got the car back from the shop.
