2001 Mustang - Fuel Cap Warning Light

My daughter has a 2001 bare-bones Mustang (by bare-bones, I means it's just a basic coupe, not a GT or anything like that.)

Her problem is this. There is a "fuel cap" light on the instrument panel. It lights up, then a few minutes later the "service engine soon" light comes on. We've had the codes read, and were told twice that replacing the fuel cap will fix the problem.

I spent $30.00 for a fuel cap from the local Ford dealer. In the meantime, I disconnected the battery because I had to change out the driver's side headlight. Of course, this cleared the codes. However, after the computer finished cycling through over a 48 hour period of driving, the lights both came back on. I had the codes checked, and got the same message.

This happened about a year ago, too, with the same results (new cap, two days later the light comes back on).

Any thoughts, ideas, etc., etc.

Thanks.

Re: 2001 Mustang - Fuel Cap Warning Light

OK. Find out exactly what the code is that's appearing. A small EVAP leak can be several things, not necessarily a bad or loose fuel cap. A lot of times even if the cap isn't on tight it takes more than a full tank of driving before the light will come on unless the pressure loss is great enough (cap missing, for example).

EVAP can be anything in the fuel system, but the code, depending on what it is can generally pinpoint the problem so it can be properly diagnosed.

The vehicle might have at least two separate codes stored as the check engine light can mean anything. Get the codes! If you have an AutoZone nearby, they should read them for free.
