2003 mustang transmission problems help

Hello~ I wondered if anyone out there could give me a little advice. My husband has a 2003 standard trans mustang. It is a V6 and last week he messed up his transmission. He thought it was in 1st gear but it was in reverse and popped the transmission. We took it in and they mechanics told us that the reverse gear was out and instead of just fixing that gear...it would be best to just replace the entire transmission. I have a friend that is telling us that he can fix this gear and save us money (he doesn't see why the entire trans needs to be replaced when it is just a gear). Has anyone done this? Does driving it with reverse gear out cause all the gears to mess up? This friend of mine says that a standard transmission isn't that hard t work on...

Any advice?

Thanks so much! What a great site!

Re: 2003 mustang transmission problems help

If you have driven the car with the broken gear alot then perhaps metal parts may have gone around in the box and damaged other gears as well but if it were me then I would attempt to replace the reverse gear and asses whta the internals look like when it is apart.

Get your friend to fix it as long as the other gears look good when it is stripped down.
