2014 Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Snake

By Stephen Edelstein

2014 Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Snake at Shelby American in Las Vegas.

Shelby American just opened a new assembly facility in Las Vegas, and the first car has rolled off the line.

That car was a Grabber Blue 2014 Mustang GT500 Super Snake, owned by the Carroll Hall Shelby Trust. Probably one of the last Shelby Mustangs built on the current platform, it will go straight to the Shelby Automotive Museum, where it will be displayed alongside notable Shelby models like the first production Cobra, CSX2000.

The new facility moves Shelby American closer to downtown Vegas, giving the company a higher-profile presence. Unlike the old location at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Shelby expects the new site to be more accessible to visitors. All of the company's operations will be consolidated there, including the post-title modification of Mustangs, Raptors, and Foci.

The GT500 Super Snake features a breathed-on version of the 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 used in the stock GT500, which produces 850 horsepower. While the Shelby Museum may have spoken for the car pictured here, you may still have a chance to snap up another of the 500 units Shelby plans to produce.

Prices start at $28,995 for the base Super Snake, which has the same 662 hp as a stock GT500 but includes other modifications. The full-bore 850-hp version starts at $39,995. That's on top of the cost of a 2014 Mustang GT500 base car.

With an all-new 2015 Mustang on the way, Shelby will soon stop producing cars based on the current platform. Ford is rumored to be planning a Shelby-badged version of its own, possibly named GT350. It will be interesting to see what Shelby American does to top it.
