351 Conversion

Hello,
I currently own an 84 5.0 Mustang GT with a 302 and a 5 speed (T-5). I am thinking about an engine swap. I want to bump up a notch to a 351. The biggest part of this project is going to be that I want to bore and stroke it up to a 383. With that engine I plan to bump up my tranny also to a 4-speed and change my gearing. This car is going to be barely street legal but I also want to make it competitive at the local dragstrip with a set of cheater slicks. What internet sites can I visit or what catalogs can I order to get parts for this swap. I want to get the engine and totally rebuild it from the ground up. I am planning on NOS or a supercharger later. Maybe someone can give me some info on this if someone has a car like mine and have done this same project.

Dan

You may be better off just getting a 390 instead, rebuilding it, and upgrading the intake, cam, things like that. You will save a lot of money instead of bore and stroking a 351, plus all that work and time. I know when I was working on my engine I couldn't wait to put it back into my car and run it. Nonetheless I would say if you want to get a 390, or even the 351, the best way of attacking it is going through some classified ads and finding junk cars with the 351/390 engine such as the old T-Birds, Galaxys, Broncos...maybe even Lincoln and Mercury had some 390 or 351 cars. I did this method to get a 302 upgrade from a 289, and all I spent was on an oil filter, and oil..Plus, I had enough money for additional parts for the car. I plan on doing it again for converting my 302 to a 390..or even a 427

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply. That is a pretty good idea. You hear alot of people doing the swap that i originally planned. Is there a reason for this?
