New here and haven't had time to search through the archives. Changed fuel filter on my '89 GT and found some dark ferrous material, and some shiny stuff looked like aluminum or other pot metal in the filter inlet side. Can't believe this is good; assume the pump is going South? It's been running rough under load, backfiring through the intake, surging. Sound like it's time for replacement? Don't have way to measure rail pressure. TIA

Though I can't imagine how a bad fuel pump could cause backfiring through the intake (timing problem), the crap in the filter and the age of the car make changing the pump prudent. Its a fairly simple procedure once you drop the fuel tank. I'd recommend upgrading to a slightly higher volume pump than stock on GP and to support future mods.
