Though I can't imagine how a bad fuel pump could cause backfiring through the intake (timing problem), the crap in the filter and the age of the car make changing the pump prudent. Its a fairly simple procedure once you drop the fuel tank. I'd recommend upgrading to a slightly higher volume pump than stock on GP and to support future mods.
