96 Mustang engine swap

My daughter has a 96 Mustang with the 3.8L V6 and a 5 speed.
The engine is pretty much shot, as it has a little over 200K miles.
A neighbor of hers has a 98 Windstar with the 3.8L and, I'm assuming, an automatic.
My question is will the engine out of the Windstar work correctly, and with out any installation problems, in her Mustang?
Thanks so much for your help and suggestions.

Re: 96 Mustang engine swap

it might i'm not sure but the trans from the windstar will not work in the mustang because the windstar is front wheel drive and the mustang is rear wheel drive. try and look around for another wrecked V6 stang at junkyards. mercury cougars from 90 up to 96 had the 3.8 as long as they were LS models and some newer XR-7's also thunderbirds had the 3.8 aswell. a 3.8 will cost you about 4-500 bucks used and installing it at a shop is another 1000 prolly unless you are doing the swap

Re: 96 Mustang engine swap

what about the auto trans from a 93 cougar xr7 3.8 , will it fit an auto 3.8 94 Mustang ? i read somewhere that the thunderbird/cougar box is bigger than the mustang one, is this true ?

Re: 96 Mustang engine swap

A little late here. The engines will not swap. the FWD 3.8 has a different bell house bolt pattern then the RWD 3.8.
