air bag problems

I am getting the air bag trouble code 6, some of you may have heard of this. In other words, the air bag light on the dash blinks 6 times, then pauses and does it all over again. It does it all the time now. I read something about a part in the steering column called the air bag clock spring.
My big question is, have any of you removed the air bag for maintenance successfully and safely?
Does disconnecting the battery cables for a certain time do this so I can pull the air bag and steering wheel?
I know there are at least 3 crash sensors in the front area of the car.
Any insight is welcome.
Thanks!

Re: air bag problems

Disconnecting your battery SHOULD allow you to remove the airbag and equipment. Just be VERY careful and try to avoid being right in front of the steering while while working on it.
