Data Plate Info - Ford Forums

Does anyone know how to get the data plate info for a car?

I have a 65 Mustang, and the data plate is missing from the door. I want to get the correct info so I can put the car back to its original color and style.

I looked on the left fender and the warranty number is: 5R08C202358

This tells me its a 65 built in San Jose, CA; 2 door convertible, and has a 289 2v engine, and was the 202358th car to come off the assembly line.

Is there a way to use this information to get the original data plate codes? Does Ford keep records of the cars they built?

Well actually Ford started its number at 101,000 so it would be 101, and some change. The data could probably be obtained through http://fomoco.com/

if you go to the website and punch in this VIN/warranty code, the rest of the required information DOES NOT come up.

if memory serves, there was supposed to be two places that the full data plate codes were located. the VIN was stamped into the sheetmetal in the engine bay, but i'm drawing a blank for the rest of the info.

due to the ease of customizing back in those days, it may be almost impossible to get the info from ford.

I did go to the website listed and found a number to call at Ford. They were nice, but unfortunately the records they have only go back to 1967. So they couldn't tell me anything.

They gave me the number to the Detroit library. I guess they have information as well. I tried calling them but they were closed. I'll keep trying, but since my car was made in San Jose, CA; I'm doubting they are going to be much help either.

You can get a warranty plate and rivets that are exactly like the original one on your car...provided...you know what is supposed to be printed on it. If you don't know then it takes some detective work to find out what you have and try to decide what most likely was on the warranty plate.

When you decide, contact Marti Auto and they can etch you a warranty plate that says whatever you want on it and you can attach it to the door. It's easy to find Marti Auto on the www.

You are probably out of luck unless you can find the "build sheet" usually located under the carpet, but most of the time that is missing. There is also a plate on the radiator support, but it has limited info.

If your car is original, you can check the rear gear ratio, you would know the trans 3sp, auto, 4sp, the body color can be determined by looking behind the back seat, there is not much else to find out. Have a new data plate made. You have the VIN.
