Early Mustang "T" handle replacement

I am trying to replace the "T" handle on my floor shifted auto. I've got the set screw out but how does the handle come off? Has anyone done this before? Thanks.

I have never done it before but there is a book at the library called "How to restore your Mustang" that should help!

After the screw is out the handle should pull off.

Usually not a hard thing to do.

I thought it would be easy too but I am not sure. It seems like it is connected to something and I am just concerned about breaking something. I will look into those books as a possibility.
Thanks.

Push the button in as you wiggle the handle upwards. There is a wire with a ball on the end protruding from some white nylon pivoting parts at the top of the shaft. By pushing the button in, you close up the parts so the handle comes off easier.
