Question Ford 9 Inch Diff Disassembly

Does anyone know how to get a sticky diff apart? I have disassembled everything in the differential case OK so far. The pinion came out, ring came off, etc. but the last part to come apart (so I can put a locker unit in) is the diff. I don't want to pound on it or put in in a press if it sin't gonna do me any good.

Anyone had this experience before?

Thanks!

Don't really understand what you can't get apart. You said the pinion is out and the ring gear is off. What isn't apart??

Are you talking about the carrier?? That is the part the ring gear is bolted to. Get the housing held down, firmly and pry it out with a long bar. Once it starts to move it should come right out.

OR

Hold it upside down at waist height over your foot. It is sure to fall out then and crush your foot.

Really, never had a problem there.

It was the carrier I couldn't get apart... Many people call the "carrier" the "differential" and call the entire assembly a third-member or some such. Lots of confusing terminology...

The propblem wasn't that I couldn't get it out of the housing, it was that I couldn't get the two halves of the carrier apart. That was until I figured out that there were holes in one half of the carrier that allowed me to put a punch in them and break the two halves apart. Sometime I amaze even myself.

Thanks for your advice though. I'll have to try that holding it at waist level thing sometime! ;-p

Cheers,

Ian
