I hear all the time when people see my car and see my original gas tank that it is unsafe. The old gas tanks, when in a situation where there is a rear accident, the seams do not give on the tank causing it to explode. There are aftermarket ones I hear of that crack and not crush, and i am wondering if anyone knew where this is, I am still searching but I can only find reproduced original style steel tanks.

I have heard somewha the same thing when it comes to stangs, only from this angle. Couple years ago I saw a report on Dateline or a show like it about older cars, Stangs were the example, models up through 1970 or so do not have a Metal shield, usally in trunk behind back seat to protect passengers from gas tanks spraying gas everywhere upon a rear impact. Back then the regulation was not in place and the report spoke about how the stang is still so popular and thier were MANY MANY ont he road still and Ford pretty much refuses to do anything about it.

If it concerns you enough, there are metal plates you can buy and install to "help" with this problem. Personally I would be more afraid of my neck snapping from the lack of a headrest should I get rear ended that hard.
