How much could one expect to pay for a 5.0 Mustang in very good condition?

Also, what years were the 5.0L engine offered, and is there still a large aftermarket for them?

Do you guys think that the 5.0L Mustang is a cost-effective dragster, or an expensive one to modify? Are donor cars easy to find for parts?

Thanks, one of these days when I'm done practicing with the Probe, I plan on a Mustang for dragging. I am using the Probe to learn on with the V6, eventually leading up to a Mustang or something else with a V8 when I feel more confident in my drag modifications.

If you are looking to build up a 5.0 mustang for the strip it wouldn't hurt
to look for a 1989 - 1993 LX. The coupe would be the lightest, and then
the hatch, followed by the GT. But you would only be talking about a
couple of hundred pounds, so it's really no big deal.

The HO 5.0 is extremely easy to work on, and the aftermarket for them
is amazing. There is a monthly magazine called "Muscle Mustangs And
Fast Fords". If you pick one of these up you can see the number of
companies that offer enough low cost parts that you could probably
build one from the ground up.

My 1989 LX hatchback ran in the mid 13's with only headers, a 3.73
rear, and some suspension work. At that time the engine was completely
stock. The car is running low 12 second passes now with only some
bolt on stuff..

Costs are another matter, as it would depend on the overall condition
of the car. You should be able to find a good car, with no rust or
major problems for somewhere in the $3500 - $4000 range..

I would agree. The MOD market for these is HUGE, cheap to expensive. Again I would echo that one should get a 89-93 Stang. I think the 5.0 was used thru 1995??? then the 4.6 came into play!

The 5.0 was offer in almost every year for the mustang. Up until 1985 it was carb'd and from 1986 to 1995 it has been fuel injected. The most prefered are Mustangs from 86 on. The EFI from 86 to 88 is speed density, and from 89 on to 95 it uses a MAF sensor, so you will have to convert the Speed density to MAF if you want to do any major mods to the car.

As for the aftermarket, it's absolutely HUGE and is constantly growing in size, so there are no worries in that department.

As for gettting a good one, the price can really vary. You can find some really cheap, some people just dont' know what they have. You probably will have a hard time finding a pure "stock" Mustang due to almost everyone wanting more power from them.
