frown I'm rattled....

I have a 2000 mustang convertible and it will not shut up. Unfortunately, it's not a roaring engine that's the problem...it rattles. It used to be a small issue, not happening all the time. Now, it's constant. It happens when I accelerate. I've also noticed that when I put in higher octane gas, it's not as bad. Is this something with the fuel system or valves? Please give me some input so I can make this my dream car instead of my nightmare!

Is this a V6 or V8?.

I would have said it may be rattley hydraulic lifters but as it seems to be less when you run high octane fuel then it could be detonation. If this is the case then you need to get the tune checked by a mechanic as it could ruin the engine.

Assuming that you have no "check engine" light on or any other driveability problems, the first thing I would check would be the EGR valve. If it is carboned up or otherwise not working properly, it can cause pinging like you're describing. Cleaning or replacing it can fix it if this is your problem.

is the rattle coming from under the car? could be the cat converter. if it is spark knocking clean your mass airflow sensor.

look at the heat shields on that catalitic convertor...the welds broke on my ford truck and they rattled until they day i broke the other welds!
