This amazing bit of technology -
http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/rearcoil.html - is probably the most extraordinary live-axle design ever made I rather think. Admittedly, it's designed explicitly for classic Mustangs '64-'73, but you'll soon see that it's a self-contained subframe affair - and in theory (like a classic self-contained Jag rear end) could be adapted for any live axle environment.
I know this post doesn't directly address your original question ED, but it's interesting to see how many people over the years have tried to fix the inherent short-comings of a live-axle rear suspension. The setup I've linked you to is the best I've personally ever seen.
