I'm in the market to pick up a new Mustang project. Something from 68 to 73 so it can easily have a big block fit in :)

Anyway, my question is this: Which V8 from the 60's or early 70's has the most potential in horsepower upgrades? I'm torn between the 302 for it's availability of parts and aftermarket support and the 390 because of it's stock horsepower rating.

Any thoughts?

Why not go for the 351W or 351C they both have potential and don't weigh near as much and are easier to install

either 351 clevo or windsor still small block no mods to suspension or chassis and can still get 400+ cubes out of them and an easy 500hp

And don't rule out '67's either. Same dimensions as a '68, and were available with a 390.

"EBXR" Your information was only partially correct. The 67 did come with the 390 "FE" engine, but it was modified at the factory with wider spaced shock tower's to handle the larger engine, where as the 68 all came with the wider spaced shock tower's. It is entirely possible that the "Aussie" model's all came with the wider one's. If so I apologize.
