I recently bought a Mustang GT 97. The tires on it are 225/50/R16 and they are rather weared (esp. rear) and I would like to change only the rear tires.
-Would you recommend to use the original size 225/55/R16 and change all tires?
-What would be the pros and cons of using the 225/50/16?
-What is the affect of using 225/50/R16 to the mile counter? I suspect that it counts more than it should be? Am I right?
No, your mile counter is only effective when you change the rim size. For example going from a 16in. rim to a 17in or 18in., would effect the mile counter. The 55 and 50 is the width of the tire. Stick with the size that you have.

Ahh actually, if you change the overall diametre, it will affect the speed and mile counter. Smaller profile tyres on the same size rims, as you are doing, will make you accelerate a tiny bit harder, give the tyres less flex, and the car will say you are doing a speed higher than you actually are, and that you have travelled further than you actually have.
Changing wheel size will NOT effect speed or mile counter, so long as the overall diametre of the tyre is kept the same.
Hi, thanks for your comments. I couldn't able to login for a while, during this period I did some investigation as well. I think I have found the answers of my questions (with the help of your comments). I am in line with KingBEEST but not fully with Stacy94PGT.
Stacy, the rim size is fixed as you mentioned, 16" but the width is 225 not 55. It is the height of the tire that effect the diameter of the wheel as KingBEEST mentioned.
I simply went to a tire dealer and measure the diameter of two tires 225/55/16 and 225/50/16. The difference in circumference is approx 8cm. The ratio I calculated is 0.96. Thus to find the correct diameter I should multiply the dyno with 0.96. Now I could able to calculate the correct mile and mpg value.
I met to say thinkness of tread, but I didn't say that. Oh well...

Well, I was all *%$# up when I posted that comment. Yeah the 55 is your aspect ratio and the 225 is the width. Thanks KingBEEST for correcting my comments.

The second number (55 or 50 in the 225/55-16 or 225/50-16) is the ratio of the sidewall height to the tire width. So a 225/55 is a taller tire tahn a 225/50 as long as they both have the same rim size of 16"
According to my tire and wheel size calculator software a 225/55-16 tire has a total height of 25.74 inches, a width of 8.86 inches and a sidewall height of 4.87 inches.
A 225/50-16 has a total height of 24.86 inches, a width of 8.86 inches and a sidewall height of 4.43 inches.
A car with the 225/50 tires would sit .88 inches closer to the ground.
