Im out heading to the shops to do the last minute pressie shopping and Im going down Hindmarsh drv in Canberra and get the red light at the base of the large hill on the way to Woden.
Anyway im looking next to me to see if there anything interesting to race, nup just an 80s Merc and a VR. I look in the rear vision mirror and see a kickass looking 1965 Mustang with a ~50yo driver. Anyway the Merc looked like he wanted a run so I thought id show him how slow it is up this hill (its pretty long and steep, my old Corona couldnt do more than 60 up here) , and in doing so I was hoping the Stang would follow suit!
Well lights go green and the Merc is already done for, I top out first, hit second and the Stang is right with me! I top out 2nd, he is about a 2 lengths back, not gaining or falling back, top out 3rd and hit 4th with him still there. Getting near the top of the hill I look down at the speedo
and decide I better back off now and so does he. I look over to give him a thumbs up but he isnt looking over...
Anyway a bit further down at the next set of lights this time he gets the front row and im right behind him. I decide not to run him here as there was now too many cars around and possibly police, I also just wanted to hear the thing! He took off like a bat outta hell and It sounded like an absolute beast, second only to Minges old blown XR8.
We eventually go our own seperate ways with me having a great big grin on my face.
The Stang looked absolute mint
, and im guessing it was just a 289, and Id say it was an Auto (but not 100% sure) but I was quite proud of my 'family' 6 cyl sedan beating the original Pony Car and it was good to see a restored one driven like it was supposed to!
PS. Yes I know street racing is bad, but where we were doing it is probably as safe as anywhere. 3lanes, no cars ahead of us, cement barrier between opposing traffic, no houses or suburban streets.
