Power Steering Issues

About three months ag, my '89 Mustang developed a power steering pump leak, had a new one installed and everything was just fine until last Wednesday.

Last Wednesday, I developed another leak from the power steering rack itself. I had a new one installed by the same shop, they also had the wheels aligned.

Since then, something is not right. The effort to turn the wheel is substantially higher and when I make a left or right turn, the wheel just barely spins back, sometimes I have to unwind it manually.

Two seperate problems?

Re: Power Steering Issues

Did they install a different ratio rack? There is more than 1 ratio available.

I went back the next day and we checked the numbers and it appears to be the same unit.

They said if I request it, they will swap for another one.

Re: Power Steering Issues

Just an off the wall thought:
Is your Stang lowered? If so, did it have offset rack bushings?

Assuming yes to both above questions, remanufactured racks come with replacement stock mount bushings.

Your rack could also have the power steering lines connected to the wrong location.

I purchased a reman TRW rack for my 91 5.0. TRW had misinstalled the fixed steel lines to the wrong locations on the rack. Fortunately for me, I caught it before install when I compared the new one to the one removed.
