Running Hot

I have a 68 Stang that has had a replacement engine fitted

It is made up of a 78 block (code D8VE-8015-A3A) and a 79 intake manifold (code D9DE-9425-DB)

I also believe that new pistons were fitted and a 30 thou re-bore done. Also a Comp Cam was fitted

I run the car on Unleaded petrol

I have also fitted a new 3 row radiator and custom fitted an electric fan

Whilst the car runs fine and will happily cruise at 50 mph all day, it runs hot in two situations

1) When in traffic. The car very soon gets hot although this is controlled when I switch on the electric fan

2) When climbing a steep hill, particularly under a heavy throttle

The engine does not use oil and does generally run well but the hot running is a worry

Any ideas!!

When you say it runs hot...what is hot to you??

Does it overheat and spit water out?? Or just read higher on the gauge??

Do you have a fan shroud??

Running Hot

Dave,

It does not spit out water, but does read hotter on the guage (about 2/3 of the way around)

I do not have a fan shroud as such but the electric fan kind of has something similar. Also I am running the car without a thermostat, which does help

Cheers
Mark

Just a couple of things...

First, you need a fan shroud.
What kind of engine driven fan do you have???

Second, the factory gauge usually aren't very accurate. You don't know what the range is. Get a direct reading gauge. One that doesn't need electric to work.

Third, put a thermostate in, or a restrictor plate. You have to slow the water movement down. This allows the radiator to work.

Since it isn't puking water out, it probably isn't that hot. Do you know anyone with a hand held laser temp sensor gun??? If so take the temp at the thermostate housing. Also, at the radiator inlet and exit.

If you don't have a laser one the best you can do is to get a small meat thermometer and hold it against the housing when the gauge is reading 2/3 on the gauge.
