confused Shifting trouble on 2001 Mustang...

Ok I'm new at this but, I have 2001 v6 mustang that is having trouble shifting. At time you have to shove really hard to get it into first and kinda have to yank it hard to get into 2nd? It varies from day to day some days it's worse than others. Though it doesn't seem to be any worse on cold days. My friends seem to think that it has something to do with the transmission?
I also have a problem with the ABS and traction control lights being on and the 2 not working. What would cause this?
The last thing is I have this really strange sweet smelling smell that has taken over my car. My friend thought could have been my heater core but, it wasn't. It's a really strong smell that is the strongest right behind the gear shift? Weird? Any help with this would be great. This stuff is driving me crazy. THANKS! :)

Re: Shifting trouble on 2001 Mustang...

Most likely the problem is in the transmission either a cracked 1-2 sychronizer or a blocking ring, But you could also have a cluth problem, the clutch disc could be shot or the cable is out of adjustment. Maybe you have and oil leak or a coolant leak getting on the cluth disc and its slipping. Or it could be a combination of the problems either way the transmission will have to come out. As far as the ABS lights do you have the same size tires on the front and back? beacause if you don't it throws off the abs senser readings and the traction control won't work and the abs light will be on. Hope this helps.

The t-5 manual trans is an easy transmisson to fix and parts are getting cheaper. But the easier way would be justo swap out the trans with a rebuilt one or a used one it will be a little more expensive, and while you have the transmission out I would replace the cluth, pressure plate and throw out bearing.
